 WELCOME TO TOKUBETSU JAPANESE CHIN!

TOKUBETSU pronounced toh-koo-betz (meaning “extraordinary” in Japanese) was established by Phillip "Pip" Poulton and Dr Kathryn "Kate" Sunn (Sydney, Australia) in 1992 with the vision to breed Chin as near to perfection as possible, whilst keeping to the current English Standard.

Phillip and Kate both had involvement with the breed prior to the establishment of the Affix; however it wasn’t until the acquisition of BIS BISS Aust Grand Ch Homerbrent Daizin (Imp UK) that a passion for the breed really evolved and through show and breeding successes.

This has resulted in distinctive Chin who incorporate the Tokubetsu trademarks of exceptional breed type, ultra short cobby bodies, with stylistic movement and outlines that exemplify the elegance so essential to the breed. As breeders, inspiration was drawn primarily from self education combined with mentoring from several historically significant persons (for Judging qualifications please refer to our contacts page).

The divide between the physical and health differentiations between the breed within Japan and the western world is clearly apparent.

Our philosophy has been to seek out and amalgamate breed specific Japanese and western strengths into the one, whilst remaining rigid in our thoughts on health and temperament. The goal being to consistently replicate Chin that have the same standout appeal to both the specialist and all rounder judge.

Tokubetsu are unmatched for Best in Show, Reserve Best In Show, Best in Specialty Show, Toy Group and “Royal” successes. These factors combine to make the kennel the TOP WINNING Japanese Chin kennel of ALL TIME in Australia!

Tokubetsu owned/bred/exhibited stock have held the title’s of Australian Champion, Australian Grand Champion, English Champion, New Zealand Champion, Hong Kong Champion, American Champion, and Japanese Champion. To date the kennel can take credit in breeding the only foreign bred Chin to win a Group 1st in Japan.

Two recent acclamations for the kennel encompass both the youngest Toy Group winning Chin, and the youngest All Breed’s Best In Show winning Chin, in the breed’s history ANYWHERE!

Tokubetsu still hold claim to the title of having the only Chin in the world to ever attain and hold N#1 All Breed status ranking. Namingly the famous "Dandy" who was also campaigned by and co-owned with (like so many of our dogs) Jennifer "Jenny" Egan of “Melloway” CKCS fame - see www.melloway.com.au - who we personally hold in the highest regard.

Deniably Phillip’s first love is Shih Tzu, the results of which have been just spectacular and can be viewed at www.hashanah.com

Owning and understanding both breeds has facilitated seeking perfection in each of them, also the reinforcement of the FACT that Chin are one of the hardest (Toy) breeds to breed.

And so the pursuit continues
